KAIRALI - The Ayurvedic Healing Village - IN GOD'S OWN COUNTRY

...there were no boundaries or borders.  It was as if my mind had once long ago made up a story about separate objects with boundaries but the story wasn't true.  The true story is that there is a luminous, spacious energy that flows through everything all the time.  It's within matter, within things as well as within space, and you can tune in to it at any time, just like changing the frequency on the radio.  There is no distance between this essence and ourselves.  It is not otherworldly.  it is right here, closer than our own flesh.

For Indians, Ayurveda has been a household name, and we all in some way or the other have experienced its medicinal values in our life very closely. We all remember those home remedies that our grand mothers boasted of, and most of them emerge from ancient Ayurveda.

Though we are aware of the benefits of Ayurveda, yet it’s becoming a neglected aspect. In today’s time of ultra stress and running around, going back to these roots is sometimes imperative for mind, body and soul and a trip to Kairali- The Ayurvedic Healing Village in Pallakad, Kerala, comes as a respite in such times.

Beautiful Dining Rooms and Gym

Away from the hustle bustle of city life, it's a 60-acre vast resort spread in middle of nowhere. Surrounded by trees and lavish landscape, it was almost a wild like natural setting, perfect for a natural retreat.

We took an afternoon flight from Delhi to reach Coimbatore and after a 1 hour 45 minutes drive we reached the Kairali Resort

Let me clear one thing in the very beginning, though it's a resort, but it isn’t a typically luxurious vacation type resort that you imagine it to be, it’s an Ayurvedic treatment center and mostly people go their for specific ailments and treatments and even the duration of stay is suggested by the experts there. Though, it’s quite relaxing and moreover detoxifying.

A traditional welcome awaited us as we reached the resort, and after easy check-ins, we dispersed in our rooms for sometime, before we met again for dinner.

Traditional Welcome at Kairali

The accommodation definitely is

an area, which can be improved

upon, as the interiors look dated.

Though the scenic natural beauty

and serenity fill you with

brightness, the rooms are rather

dull and gloomy inside. But, we

were informed and even

witnessed ourselves that they

have started renovating the

cottages already that too

beautifully.

After resting for sometime, we headed out to the canteen for dinner, it’s called a canteen because the food is always freshly prepared and never stored or served stale. Most of the vegetables used in cooking are grown within the landscape of resort and hence are always fresh and organic.

Detoxifying Food at Kairali

Food available at the resort is in its simplest form, nothing fancy about it, yet the tastes are retained. Normally the diet is suggested by the Ayurvedic Doctor and sent to the kitchen, but there is liberty to explore and indulge in certain dishes. Even then the food is perfect to detoxify oneself and remain light.

After a light meal, we all set in to our rooms to have a good nights sleep, as the journey had made us a little tired.

Yoga Session

Beautiful Morning at the Resort

Treatment Centre Entrance

Our morning began at 6AM with a

refreshing yoga session by the poolside.

It was a wonderful feeling and something

that cannot be explained in words alone,

one really needs to experience it.

After the yoga session, we went for our

consultation with the Ayurvedic Doctor

and understood what all treatments would

be suitable for each one of us.

For day 1 it was only the

Abhyangam Massage which

is like a preliminary

massage, preparing for

 other levels of treatment.

 Also this is the only

massage that can be taken

        by anyone and everyone.

Same sex masseurs take you to

the massage rooms, which are

comfortable and spacious.

The rhythmic movements of

masseurs on my body led to

ultimate relaxation. After the

massage, they take you for a

steam session, for which one is

enclosed in a wooden box like

structure with just the head

sticking up, 5 minutes in steam

and your body feels ultra fresh with all pores open, helping the skin to glow naturally.

After this its time for shower, with specially prepared Ayurvedic scrubs and shampoos, and trust me those make you feel even more refreshed and glowing.

Post this entire massaging session, we were at leisure and spent our time strolling in the gardens, exploring natural beauty and witnessing the growth of natural vegetation.

Massage Room

The 2nd Day, I was advised to have the Elakizhi , which is done using a potli which is filled with herbs etc. dipped in warm oil and patted all over the body. This is quite helpful in relieving pains.

The 3rd day, I wished to have the Shirodhara but as we were travelling back, I was not advised for the same. The doctor said we need to take rest for at least 6 to 8 hours after that massage as the effects are calming and relaxing. So, instead i went in for the Podikizhi, which is again a Potli massage, but instead of oil they use steam to warm up the potlis. This was also quite relaxing.

Apart from these treatment massages, one can meditate in their evening session and believe me this is one thing you definitely must do, as the meditation room in itself as an experience of another level, its beyond words can explain, but all I can say is you feel as if you are transported in another world. Also one can take a dip in the pool and beat the heat.

Poolside

One evening, the resort made a special arrangement to showcase a Shadow Puppet program for all its guests. It was phenomenal, as it's an age old art which is being kept alive by this group who has travelled throughout the world for their shows. Each one of us, especially the other

Yet on the third day, we decided to explore Palakkad a bit and headed out to one hearty meal at Noorjehan Restaurant. The meal at this iconic place was just too good, as it was simple yet so authentic and flavorful.

Sunday, being a holiday mostly markets were closed. Though, we were lucky enough to buy some banana chips and other stuff from a well known shop, whose owner was kind enough to open his shop for all of us.

The next morning, we were

invited to witness a cooking

session with the Chef at

Kairali Kitchen. It was an

enlightening experience

seriously, as the principles

of Ayurveda, simple cooking

techniques and minimal

ingredients and spices were

used to make delicious and healthy dishes.

On the way to Airport, we were given a Kairali factory tour at Pollachi, TN, which showcased how these Ayurvedic products, and medicines are made and it truly was an enriching experience. The process of refining herbs and other ingredients in the most perfect manner to make the best use of each one of them, is what we witnessed.

After spending 3 nights and 4 days at Kairali, all I can say is that this place is surely worth a visit, just to get away from the hustle bustle of daily life and experience some calmness and serenity in natural surroundings while you get treatments and massages done specific to your ailments.
